Common theft crimes include grand and petty theft, embezzlement, robbery, and receiving stolen property.  Theft crimes can be serious depending upon the value of the property stolen and/or the criminal record of the defendant.  All theft crimes are considered crimes of moral turpitude, otherwise known as crimes of dishonesty, and can have extremely severe consequences.  While certain theft charges are misdemeanor offenses, other theft crimes are considered felony offenses.  In California, these Southern California theft crimes can be either a misdemeanor or a felony.  Some theft crimes involve aggravating factors such as deceit, violence, or the use of a weapon.  The most serious theft crimes involve the use or threatened use of force.  Theft crimes can often be reduced to none theft related cases.  For felony theft crimes the punishments can be much worse.  Theft crimes conviction can result in fines, jail time, and loss of employment.
